Big changes in life often lead to big projects at home or in your loved ones’ home.  When you just don’t have the time to handle those projects, call us.  We understand.  We have been in your shoes.  That’s why we are in the business of helping others through difficult transitions in life.  In 2000, my dad was diagnosed with mesothelioma and my parents decided to move to Southern California to be closer to me, their only child.  I traveled to their home in Laredo, Texas to help them prepare for the move.  My dad ended up in the hospital and my mother spent her days with him.  That left me, alone, in their three bedroom home trying to decide what would fit into a small one bedroom assisted-living residence unit.  When my mother would come home in the evenings, she would decide that things I had set aside for recycling, redistribution, and trashing, had to go along with them!  (We didn’t realize at that point in time that she was already displaying symptoms of senile dementia.)   With the help of a friend who drove over 200 miles, and an aunt who flew in, we eventually got their stuff packed into a rented moving van.  Steve drove the van, hauling their mini-van behind, from Laredo to Monrovia.  I accompanied them on a flight to California.  We moved their boxes into their residence, made the bed for them, and since I had exhausted my vacation time, I went back to work.  The boxes never got unpacked.  Both of my parents were too overwhelmed by the move to be able to address the mess in their residence.  Steve and I were working full-time, and honestly, stressing because we didn’t know where to put all of the stuff that my mother had insisted on bringing along.  A month later, we moved them from the assisted-living facility into our home and most of their stuff into a storage locker.  We had the storage locker until after both of them had passed.  We are not sorry that we did it, but we sure wished there had been a better solution to the problem.

We use 3-dimensional, to-scale, models to demonstrate the available floor space in the new home and help decide, on the basis of that information, the appropriate amount of furniture and “stuff” to move.  We pack carefully.  We provide referrals for moving and storage, as needed.  We manage the move with the preferred provider.  We unpack the stuff and ready the new home for its residents.  We return to the old lodging and prepare to liquidate the estate.  We sort, declutter, organize, and redistribute items as determined by the owners or their appointees.  We hold an on-line auction (this precludes having everybody and their brother tramp through the home during an estate sale) and then get the home ready for the realtor.  (But if you really want to have an estate sale – Caring Transitions excels at boutique-style estate sales – they are actually quite fun as we get to meet all kinds of neat people!)  Our goal is to have the proceeds of the auction/sale cover the cost of the services we provide so that there are no out-of-pocket expenses for the family.
