Wildfire Season and Aging Parents: A Simple Go-Bag Checklist for Foothill Families

Posted by on

If a wildfire evacuation order came for your mom's street tonight, would she know what to grab? Would you?

September is National Preparedness Month, and here in the Angeles Foothills, it lands at exactly the right moment. Santa Ana wind season is settling back in, the hills behind Monrovia, Sierra Madre, and Arcadia are dry after a long summer, and the Angeles National Forest sits close enough to every one of our towns that “it won't happen here” was never really a plan. It's also, quietly, one of the easiest ways to open a much bigger conversation with an aging parent — without it turning into a fight about “getting rid of everything.”

Start with the bag, not the house

You don't need to solve downsizing this week. You need one bag, packed and by the door. That's it. Inside it: a list of current medications with dosages (or a week's supply, if a doctor's fine with that), copies of ID, insurance cards, and any power-of-attorney or healthcare directive paperwork, a phone charger, a couple of irreplaceable photos, a change of comfortable clothes, and a few days of water and snacks.

Packing that bag together is a small, low-stakes exercise in a skill that matters a lot more later: deciding what actually needs to come along when everything can't. It's the same muscle downsizing uses — just with far lower stakes and a lot less emotion attached.

It also gives you real, useful information before you need it. Where does your parent keep their medication list? Do they know where the insurance paperwork actually lives, or is it “somewhere in the office”? Building the go-bag together answers questions you'll be glad you already know the answers to, whether the next event is a three-day evacuation or, eventually, a permanent move.

Let the go-bag open the bigger conversation

Once the bag is zipped, there's a natural next question, and it's a kind one: “If this were a permanent move instead of three days, what would you want packed first?” That single question tends to do more than a dozen direct conversations about “you should really think about moving.” It lets your parent lead with what matters to them, rather than feeling like a decision is being made at them.

If those conversations start pointing toward an actual move — whether it's a smaller home nearby, assisted living, or moving in with family — that's exactly where we come in. Our Certified Relocation and Transition Specialists work with families across Monrovia, Pasadena, Arcadia, Sierra Madre, and the rest of the Angeles Foothills to sort, downsize, coordinate the move, and — through CTBids — turn what's left behind into an online estate sale that goes to people who'll actually use it, instead of a dumpster. We're bonded, insured, and we've done this enough times to know it can be handled with patience instead of panic.

Preparedness month is a good excuse to do the small thing now, before there's ever a reason to need the bag.

Have you had “the conversation” with a parent yet, or are you still looking for the right moment? We'd genuinely like to know what's worked (or hasn't) for your family — tell us in the comments.
